Useful Critical
Tips for Writers
- First tell the author what is working in their creative writing. Find something that is right about what they are doing or expressing. Then use tact when telling them what MIGHT be considered for change. Or what your "suggestion" could be, rather than stating your opinion as absolute fact. If it is an honest evaluation, rather than perceived as an elitist attack, people are more receptive to the possibility of making changes.
- Receiving: First and foremost please remember that the critique is the opinion of another, take it graciously and think suggestions through. Do not take offense. Yes your writing is your own and in the end only you have the power to change it but be open-minded.
- Giving: Do not degrade, do not use derogatory remarks and remember that this is their writing and their baby. Give suggestions without being negative; don't revise a piece for them. Be polite and courteous.
- Be as understanding and gentle as you can when critiquing other's pieces. The poet who creates the piece is usually pouring out his/her heart for all to see.And for those who have received criticism on one's work, don't take it personally or give into the thought of being a "Bad Poet" and whatever you do, don't delete a poem just because somebody doesn't like it.
- Verbs are better than adjectives. If you want your poetry to take off and be interesting, remember that simple rule. Tell them which part particularly appealed to you & why...how did it make you feel??? What did it make you think about??? Help them to see & understand their own piece in a new light; It is guaranteed that they'll appreciate it. Keep it simple, honest & pure.
- Above all, be generous...no one likes every single thing they read...even if you don't like the piece, find something positive to say about it; their form was original, their symbolism was strong or their background was well-chosen...something...Be thoughtful in your comments & they will not only "return the favor", they will do so graciously, with appreciation.
